Screened from nearly 60 applications for charity surgery program, 22 cases meeting necessary requirements were selected for surgery during the 6th mission of Facing the World Charity at Hong Ngoc General Hospital. On 6 May 2019, the first surgeries were successfully performed, leaving memorable emotional moments for the team of experts and patients.
Hong Ngoc General Hospital started cooperating with Facing the World Charity (UK) since 2016. Until now, the hospital and the charity has offered several missions of charity surgery program, about one to two mission each year. 2019 is the significant year marking a new milestone in the journey of FTW and Hong Ngoc Hospital. The number of missions this year is increased to 3 or 4 missions, which means that the number of patients receiving charity surgery would be doubled.
The first mission of 2019 took place in early summer when the weather was quite nice after some hot days. It was cool and windy, making patients and the family less tired when travelling to the hospital and spending time there.
Let’s follow the team of experts to see what they did during 6 May – the first day of operation:
Dr. Nguyen Tuan Anh (Hong Ngoc General Hospital) examined and talked with patient about his condition before operation.
Dr. Naresh Josshi (FTW), one of the world’s leading ophthalmologists, examined a little children. After thoroughly checking her eyes, he discussed with her father about some cases could happened after the surgery and how to care for her eyes for better recovery.
Dr. Nguyen Nguyet Nha (Hong Ngoc General Hospital) visited patient Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan. She has facial deformity with a big tumor on one eye. She experienced a surgery at Hong Ngoc General Hospital in 2017, which significantly improved her face. This year, she comes back to correct other defects on her face.
Dr. Nha discussed with Dr. Norma Timoney (FTW’s Chairman) about medical techniques that would be applied to the patient.
Renowned as a skillful doctors, Dr. Naresh Josshi always carefully selects appropriate surgical instruments before entering the operation room. He made a brief guidance to Hong Ngoc General Hospital’s team about these instruments and how to choose the most suitable ones for each case.
Dr. Bui Tuan Anh (Hong Ngoc General Hospital) joined a surgery with FTW team of experts and actively contributed to its success. This should be a precious experience to him as it allowed him to work and learn from the world’s leading specialists in reconstructive surgery.
Dr. Nguyen Huu Tung (Hong Ngoc General Hospital) directly performed a surgery with the support of Dr. Nguyen Nguyet Nha.
Dr. Nguyen Nguyet Nha highly focused on each step of a complex surgery.
Each surgery lasted about 3 to 5 hours, complex cases even required more. In this mission, each doctors had to take 3 to 5 surgeries each day. Despite that tough schedule and high volume of workload, they forgot all tiredness and only focused on their patients as they know that each second passed in the operation room is precious moment to their patient.
The 6th mission of FTW’s charity surgery program at Hong Ngoc General Hospital took place from 4 May to 10 May, including 4 days of operation with 22 patients receiving life changing surgery. Giving more opportunities for them to reach their dream is our happiness and pride. We do hope that the charity surgery program organized by Facing the World and Hong Ngoc General Hospital would bring more chances of improving their appearance to disfigured children across the country so that they can live a normal and happy life in the future.
